An Angel at the Border

By Josefina Lopez

En Sásabe por alli pasa todo y nada pasa.

De alli salen tantos

Pero alla llegan pocos

Camine por el desierto con agua en mis manos y encontre una cruz.

I walked through the dessert with water in my hands and I found a cross.

I carry crosses in the dessert

I carry crosses in my heart

Searching for those wandering spirits

of those left behind.

Wondering what cactus,

What bush,

What rock,

What snake held their hand

when the sun reclaimed their soul and took them

to the land of the in between.

Where walls are not real, but no one can feel

Or hear the crying and howling in the wind

Or see the wounded feet or hearts of the invisible.

I drove through the dessert with water in my hands

and I found another cross.

I carry crosses in the dessert.

I carry crosses in my heart

For those that have died but who are not forgotten

For those who are buried in a cemetery of unmarked graves.

I whistled through the dessert and finally found three spirits

who handed me their crosses and whispered like the wind,

“Recuerdame, Don’t Forget Me, Remember me,”

as they finally crossed into the light.
